Manual Testing Intro

Let me start with my story, the author of this guide.

When I first started learning software testing, I had a lot of questions:

🤔 What should I learn first? Where do I start?

🤔 What are the most important things I should understand?

🤔 Do I need to memorize definitions?

🤔 How do I know if I’ve learned enough to start applying for jobs?

🤔 What if, after learning all this, I can’t find any bugs?

🤔 How do I know what I have to test specifically?

These questions haunted me. With no support and a background in economics, not computer science, I spent a lot of hours reading everything I could find online. My biggest fear was not being able to showcase any experience on my resume. How would I ever get selected for an interview?

Due to time and money constraints, I decided to start applying for jobs after some self-study and stating in my resume what I’d learned, despite my low confidence and many insecurities. The tests and exercises at interviews surprised me since I was new to this, but I did my best and learned something from each one. Eventually, I was accepted at several places, and I made sure to follow up when I could to figure out what mattered to them in the decision.

After I got hired, new challenges arose: terms I didn't understand, figuring out how things work in a software company, who to talk with, what to test, how to report a bug clearly without spending too much time on it, and more. So, I spent a lot of time learning in my free time.

Over time, I shared what I learned with others around me, helping them transition into software testing too. Eventually, I got involved in recruitment myself, learning what skills and knowledge a tester needs from the inside out. My work experience taught me the essentials a tester should know.

Driven by my early insecurities, I continually improved my skills and got involved in related areas like customer behavior, product development, and project coordination. I found fulfillment in teaching and helping others improve as well.

This guide is my attempt to simplify the overwhelming amount of information out there, making it easier for non-technical people to understand and organize.

I explain the more complicated concepts with examples and visual aids, provide tips, and focus on the day-to-day aspects of the role. I focus on information that is valuable both before and after getting a job in the field.

My goal is to provide a starting point for beginners, helping them truly understand the basics of software testing and navigate their career path more smoothly and affordably. After all, these jobs are expected to see a 25% growth between 2021-2031.
