Getting a Job in Manual Testing
🤔 Where do I begin looking for an entry-level job?
🤔 How do I present myself to potential employers if I have no prior experience?
🤔 What can I do if my resume doesn't mention anything about software testing?
🤔 Do I need a certificate or something if my background is not in IT?
🤔 Is my knowledge enough to start applying for jobs?
Those are some of the questions I struggled with when I decided to transition from my current occupation as an accountant to a career in software testing.
There was no ChatGPT at the time, and the certification was too expensive for me ($200 years ago). I didn't know many software companies in my local area, nor did I know of any relevant courses.
I just had to try out things and find my own answers, which took time. I got the job I wanted without spending any money, but by investing a lot of time.
Who would have thought that 2 years later I'd have the certificate and start recruiting other testers myself? And it has been 10 years now. :)
Now, I've prepared this guide to help others get into the field faster and more smoothly, for what I consider a reasonable cost.
It includes on-point tips and advice from my own experiences and the knowledge I've accumulated over time.
I don't focus too much on the learning part in this specific guide, but primarily on answering the questions above and other job-related aspects that proved to be important in my experience. It's more like an action plan towards getting the job.
The guide will help you with these:
✅ Understand the responsibilities of a tester.
✅ Know what education and certificates may help.
✅ Overview of the skills that employers expect from a tester.
✅ Weigh the pros and cons of manual versus automation testing roles.
✅ Compare office-based versus remote job opportunities.
✅ Get insights on common interview questions and other tips.
✅ Find out when, where and how to apply for entry-level positions.
✅ How to use networks, events, and other strategies to get a job.
✅ Understand the concept of "freelancing" which is popular nowadays.
✅ How to build an online presence if you have no experience yet.
✅ Build a relevant resume and cover letter despite the lack of experience.
✅ Showcase your self-learned skills and personal work through a portfolio.
